Home Remedies for Common Spring PestsIn Fall on May 2, 2014 at 4:55 pm | Written by admin
The weather is starting to improve in the Chicago area and as the temperature continues to increase, so does the insect population. Certain pests such as roaches, stink bugs, ants, and bees reemerge during the spring and they can make their way into your home. If an insect infestation gets out of hand, it is best to call a professional but if you have noticed a few bugs in your home, you may want to try getting rid of them yourself before making that call. The following are creative household remedies to control the most common types of home invaders.
Roaches have a menacing presence when found in a home as they are rather large and unsightly and they can contaminate food supplies. If you notice some roaches in your house, you can help control them by applying a couple different solutions to the areas where they have been seen. One solution is hot sauce and water; create a solution by mixing the two and spray it wherever you have seen the roaches. Another mixture that is effective is a borax and sugar mix consisting of one part sugar and three parts borax. The roaches will be attracted to the sugar but the borax will scratch at their exoskeleton.
Stink bugs are a tricky pest to get rid of because they emit a strong, unpleasant odor when crushed. The best method of control for stink bugs is prevention which can be done with dryer sheets. If there are stink bugs near your doors or windows, rub some dryer sheets against the screen and around the door. The stronger the scent of the dryer sheets, the more effective they will be for discouraging stink bugs from entering your home. Catnip can also help to keep stink bugs away; just sprinkle some near possible entry points to your home.
Ants are a common spring pest and fortunately there are a number of household remedies that can help keep them under control. One remedy is chalk which you can use by scribbling it near your doors and any other possible entry points. It is not known why exactly but ants will not walk over chalk. Other home remedies that are effective for ants include baby powder and cayenne pepper. Baby powder has cornstarch in it which ants do not like and cayenne pepper contains capsaicin which irritates ants.
Bees are beneficial creatures for pollination and honey production but they can make homeowners uncomfortable if their hive is too close to the house. One way to help keep bees at a distance is to plant marigolds around your yard because these flowers repel bees. It also helps to keep your lawn trimmed as bees are more attracted to lawns with longer grass.
