Bed Bug Control
One of the most difficult household pests to identify and control is bed bugs. They are flat, wingless oval-shaped bugs that only grow to about ¼ of an inch in length. They can hide in almost any crevice in a mattress and other furniture as well as behind wood trim, curtains, baseboards, wallpaper, and picture frames. Bed bugs are nocturnal which makes them even harder to detect and they feed on people’s blood as they sleep. Bed bugs are even more difficult to control than they are to identify, yet there are several methods of bed bug control that can help curb an infestation. If these measures do not remove the infestation, call Green T Pest Control to have them eliminated.
The most effective means of bed bug control is manipulating the temperature because bed bugs are highly sensitive to temperature changes. This can be done with either heat or cold treatment. When using cold treatment, the trick is to subject them to cold air and air flow as they do not handle either one well. Cold treatment can be administered by placing fans on the floor near the infested areas for increased air flow and running the air conditioner to keep the temperature down. This method is cost effective and will yield some results but it is very difficult to eliminate an entire infestation in this way because bed bugs could be hidden in areas where they will be unaffected.
Heat treatments are more effective for killing bed bugs than cold treatments but are still rather ineffective for complete removal. These treatments include steam treatment and using clothes dryers. Steam treatment is very effective for killing bed bugs but the temperature of the treatment must be at least 150 degrees to be effective. This process can also be very tedious and time consuming because bed bugs hide in a variety of places and the steam may not reach all of them. Using a clothes dryer to kill bed bugs in clothing and blankets can be quite effective as well but it will not eliminate the source of an infestation. Infested bedding and clothing should be washed in hot water with laundry detergent and put in the dryer at high heat for at least twenty minutes. However, if there are still bed bugs in the mattress or surrounding areas, the sterilized bedding can become re-infested.
